REQUIRED LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION 
Must possess A credential issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): 
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) 

MINIMUM EDUCATION 
• Associate degree in Business, Health Information Management, Health Informatics 

Preferred Education 
• Bachelor's degree in Business, Health Information Management / Informatics or Master's Degree preferred. 

MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE 
Basic Qualifications: 
• Minimum five (5) years of experience supervising a multidisciplinary coding staff of non-exempt and entry level employees. 
• Minimum three (3) years of experience implementing coding policies and regulations as well as applying coding procedures. 

Additional Requirements: 
• Possess proficiency in a variety of software applications such as MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint. 
• Able to effectively coordinate multiple projects, use time management skills and exercise independent judgment. 
• Able to adapt to shifting priorities; perform as a team player and operate in a tactful and diplomatic manner. 
• Possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills required to communicate effectively internally and externally with all levels of management. 
• Must be able to effectively work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment. 

Preferred Work Experience 
• Prior experience as a director, manager or supervisor of a coding or Health Information Management department. 

JOB SUMMARY 
The Coding Manager has responsibility for managing regional hospital coding operations (RHCO) that includes: assessing operational staffing needs in order to ensure the compliance and timeliness of coding patient records; performing and assisting with coder education and reviews to ensure the quality and quantity of coded records; developing and maintaining effective policies, procedures, systems and functioning as the coding liaison and coding subject matter expert in partnership with other regional and hospital departments, medical staff and external regulatory and reporting entities. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY 
• Manages, coordinates and provides leadership to the coding and coding support staff 
• Provides coverage and support to the RHCO directors and coding managers in all 4 regional locations
• Reports to the Regional Hospital Coding Directors for coverage and support directions 
• Assesses daily operational state, identify gaps and adjusts to meet the daily completion targets and timeliness 
• Utilizes all available management tools such as the inventory, vacation and additional hours reports in collaboration with coding managers 
• Ensures coded records meet the coding accuracy required standard per coding guidelines and regional coding and abstracting workflows 
• Provides coding and workflow guidance and coaching to coders on as needed basis 
• Contribute to performance evaluations and resolves grievances for direct reports and other assigned staff 
• Manages and resolves human resource, employee and department safety and risk management issues 
• Ensures effective use of patient health information data by providing statistical analysis and reports 
• Consults with other departments who utilize coded data for management, quality, utilization, research, and other functions 
• Ensures that goals and services provided by Regional Hospital Coding Operations are aligned with organizational priorities 
• Coordinates, and implements projects and/or programs to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of coding operations
